This evening got a dramatic start as they discovered that they had no servant to wash their feet. This gives Jesus a great opportunity to demonstrate to them what he had thought them several time, for example in Mark 10,43-44: “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.”
Jesus was great enough to be free to become the slave of all! Only servants and slaves could wash the feet of other people. Here Jesus does it and still recognizes that he is their Master, their Rabbi. He asks them to follow his example – yes, he even go as far as stating: “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.» Joh 13,35
Love is not just a nice habit to have, it is the real sign for people to know that you are a disciple of Jesus. Do you want to be great? Remember that to be the first has to do with becoming a slave to all – and when you have the Jesus attitude towards this it will be a major blessing in your life!
