He showed them an example and evaluated there results when they were practicing. He rebuked them for their unbelief when the miracles did not happen and encouraged them to to greater things! They were in a very practical training, but as time approached when he should leave them, he very strongly told them not to start their ministry before they had received the Power of The Holy Spirit. They should remain in Jerusalem until they had received The Holy Spirit.
It is amazing to see the transformation that this experience did with these fearful and slightly confused disciples! Now they are not afraid any longer, but run out in the city and tell about the great works of God, speaking in tounges so that everybody understands them in languages they did not know. They behaved in a way that the people they met wondered if they had been drinking too much wine.
Peter then raise his voice and explains that they are not drunk of wine, but this has to do with a prophetic word from the prophet Joel. He had told that in the last days God would pour out his Spirit on all flesh, and they should prophecy, dream dreams, see visions and miracles would happen! He was telling them that the Jesus that they had rejected and cried after: “Crucify, crucify”, God himself had made the Messiah they were waiting for, and he was appointed to be the coming judge for the living and dead!
They were shocked to hear this message and experience the revelation and power that Peter was speaking with. They cry out: “What shall we do?” and the answer from Peter is crystal clear: “Repent, and everybody be baptized in water to the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the same Holy Spirit as we have received!” After this message 3000 people accept the message and are the same day baptized in water – the first New Testament church was born!
These first Christians continued the works of Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit, and they saw the same miracles, signs and wonder as Jesus did, even greater than these. We are called to do the same works today, and it is great to see that it really works! Jesus said in John 14;12: “He who puts his faith in me will do the very works which I do, and he will do greater things than these, because I am going to my Father.” And in Mark 15;17: “These signs shall follow them that believe: In my name they will cast out demons, they shall speak in other tounges, . “
You that might read these lines can yourself receive this life by repenting from you sins and receiving Jesus as the Lord of your life. The Bible tells us in John 1;12-13: “Everyone that received him (Jesus), these he gave the right of becoming children of God . . . and they are born of God”. The new birth in you happens through the Holy Spirit, and he will be a new Spirit in you, that loves to follow Jesus. The most natural life for you will be to follow him and do his deeds and his works! What a great life to live!
